My name is Katie Hopkins. I’m 29 and I live in Maine with my husband and two cats. I’ve been involved in family history my whole life but have spent the last 6 years doing in depth research for my own family and many others. I am a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and subscribe to their code of conduct. I’ve been certified through the International Association of Professions Career College and I pride myself on constantly learning and pursuing continuing education.
About the Genealogist
Genealogy, to me, is more than just names and dates. In fact, the names and dates and lineages of genealogy have been a part of oppressive and abusive systems and in some ways still are today (think eugenics, think the holocaust, think white supremacy). Genealogy, to me, is about humanity, it puts history into context, and it better puts my own existence into context. Since beginning my own journey with genealogy I’ve had the opportunity to see how family history impacts different people, how it inspires different people. I’ve learned about epigenetics and how the trauma your ancestors experienced could be locked inside your own DNA. I’ve spoken with third or fourth generation Americans trying to learn about their heritage and longing for the traditions and recipes of the country their ancestors left behind and lost through their assimilation. I myself went through a period of time where my own existential dread at being forgotten someday after I die drove me to try to find as many of my ancestors as possible to remember them as a sort of talisman. Whatever it is you’re looking for in your genealogy, I want to help you find it.
Most of my research experience is based in the United States but I’ve also traced ancestry back to the following countries with varying success depending on record availability:
England
Ireland
Canada
Italy
Sweden
The Netherlands
France
Germany
Spain
Scotland
Russia
Ukraine
Denmark
Belgium
Poland
Finland
Please note that I cannot guarantee research results.
I can guarantee I will turn over every metaphorical rock I can to find whatever I can about your ancestors. And I will never take a project I don’t believe I’m qualified for. If you are looking for help outside of my wheelhouse, I will do what I can to point you to someone with a more appropriate research background.
